I rehooked up the old Ralink wireless card and tried the most recent drivers again. Locked up as before. I then installed an older driver, version 2. I successfully downloaded the newest slackware linux client at full speed on utorrent without any problems.

So it maybe specific to the most recent driver version. Look around for an older driver version for that chipset, if you can find it. I can confirm that using v2. There is one caveat however, and that is the v2. This appears to be conincidental with the card automatically scanning for new networks and this problem doesn't exist in later drivers, however as we all know, the later drivers have other faults!
