I'm now at installation 44 of NET updates are a pain. When I checked the update history though I saw two failed updates had appeared in between the successful installations of KB and KB : these were KB failed with error 0xf and KB failed with error 0x Was this reply helpful? Just open the WU window and click settings. I advise my clients to set WU at Never, permanently. There is a good reason for that. If you set it at any other setting, and an update is added that is recommended and checked in the list, and you then shut down, those that are "selected" meaning checked will be installed.
You can stop that if you go to WU before you shut down and unselect them, but few people do that. Never does NOT mean never update. It simply means never update automatically.
It is the only way you gain complete control over this process. What you are describing rather well is number 1 above. I would not use this procedure for a normal monthly update. I agree about not doing automatic updates and the problems that go with it I will add something later. This is all good feedback! I was wanting to consolidate the ideas that seem to work from several sources into one consistent message while never actually having the problem. Is this worthy of asking MS Answers to make it a sticky since it will just keep getting pushed down further and further out of site if there are not more replies See Profile.

You're a big shot around here Then I'm going to add some stuff about setting WU to auto and why that might not be a good idea and that could prevent some the "Windows Update broke my system" topics that come up after every Patch Tuesday.
